DC Fire and EMS personnel pulled two women from the second floor of a burning house fire that was reported at approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in the 7200 block of 8th Street NW.

Both women, reportedly family members, were transported to an area hospital with life-threatening critical injuries, and the agency announced on Tuesday afternoon that both have died.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature due to an electrical issue that sparked the flames.

Officials say they are now working to determine if the smoke alarms found in the home were functional at the time the fire broke out. They also returned to the neighborhood later on Tuesday afternoon to stress the importance of alarms and installing several devices.

Officials have not identified the two victims.
